How to turn off location sharing on BeReal to prevent others from tracking your whereabouts

Redeem now

  • You can turn off location sharing on BeReal after taking your daily picture and before sending it.
  • If initially enabled, BeReal will share your location with your friends by default when you post your picture every day.
  • These locations are quite precise, and you might prefer to hide your location.

BeReal is a social media app that focuses on, as the name suggests, "being real" — no elaborate slideshow-style stories, no filters, no soundtracks, no green screens. You take a snapshot and share it, period.

But there's a potential privacy risk associated with BeReal as well. If initially enabled, the app will, by default, show the precise location when you snapped your BeReal post. If you'd rather keep your location to yourself, you can turn off your location on BeReal with a few taps.

How to turn off your location in BeReal on iPhone

If you've previously allowed location sharing for the app, you can disable your location after taking your picture, but before you post it. Here is what to do:

1. When you're notified that it's time to create a post on BeReal, take your picture the way you ordinarily would, but don't send it.

2. In the photo preview, find your location at the bottom of the image and tap it.

3. In the pop-up menu, tap Location off.

4. Tap Send to post your picture with the location turned off.

How to turn off your location in BeReal on Android

If you're using BeReal on Android, you control whether the location is on or off right before sending the photo.

1. When you're notified that it's time to create a post on BeReal, take your picture the way you ordinarily would, but don't send it.

2. Tap the Send button.

3. On the Send options page, in the Other options section, clear the checkbox for Share my position

4. Tap Send

Quick tip: For iPhone and Android, if you turn off location sharing, it's now off by default. Subsequent BeReal posts will be captured with the location disabled unless you follow the same steps to turn it back on.
